Orford Ness

Orford Ness is now a haven for wildlife, flora and fauna.   However, starting in 1917 and continuing up to the early 1980s, this was a place of nightmares.  From “lethality and vulnerability” weapons testing in World War I, to the testing of nuclear triggers for nuclear weapons, this small spit of land endured bombing and strafing for approximately 60 years.   For me, Orford Ness and its decaying buildings embody the fundamental paradox at the heart of our relationship with both our fellow humans and our environment.  Orford Ness is also a powerful warning of the dangers of inviting nightmares into the waking world.
